I attended the E-Centre show on 8/11/99. I purchased general admission lawn seating because we had a blast in that area at last year's Further Festival. We arrived about 2 hours early. The 'activities' in the parking lot were typical — tailgating and prepping for the show. We entered the E-Centre around 7:30 and staked our claim to a decent patch of lawn. The show started promptly at 8:30. I proceeded to have the single worst concert experience of my life. Roger Waters sounds great. His voice was strong and the band was very tight. The backup singers were excellent, and I really enjoyed when they sang the part of 'Mother'. The problem was the crowd. I have never seen such disrespect for an artist and his fans as I witnessed this evening. Apparently I was out when the following was announced: General Admission seating means you wander through the entire show, getting as stoned and/or drunk as possible, and aggravating as many people as you can. Most of the wanderers were 15-20, but not all. The only explanation I can come up with is the tickets were so cheap ($15), they couldn't pass it up. After all, you get some popular radio tunes that you can scream along to (who cares if the timing is different, scream the lyrics anyway) on top of 4-6 hours of being utterly blitzed. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy getting 'altered' as much as they do, but I was there for the performance and the music. I can understand Roger's frustration which resulted in him spitting at a fan. He endured the idiocy for over 10 years before snapping ... I was ready to snap after 60 minutes. I hope the people in reserved seating enjoyed the show. It looked like Roger was having a good time and putting forth an effort to entertain us. As noted in other reviews, the video screen wasn't revolutionary, but served as a decent backdrop for the song selections. The setlist seems the same as previous shows. I had endured enough by the time 'What God Wants' ended and left. I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see a Roger Waters (or Pink Floyd) tour where 10% or less of the music is 'popular'. The tour slogan could be "if all you know about us is from the radio, stay at home". They'd still sell a bazillion tickets ... to the true fans. Maybe we were just in a bad spot (although it was the same for everyone as far as I could see). Maybe it's just the crowds in NJ. Maybe the moon and stars were misaligned. Whatever the cause, I doubt I'll go back to the E-Centre and I'll never buy general admission tickets to anything again.
